It happens everyday
Today, while I was in another teacher's room, two young boys entered and one shouted at the other, "I don't date boys!" I immediately stopped and called both of them over to discover what this argument was about, only to discover one called the other "gay." Immediately, I took both to task for using that word as a means to make a specific class of people, namely those in the LGBT community, appear to be less than equals; less than human beings; a class of people who do not belong in society. I used examples of stereotypical words found through history to subdue a class of people. All the while their teacher stood behind me without uttering a word. After I was finished, I warned the two of them that using a word to make others not a part of society, cause them to feel alone, alienated would result in further disciplinary action. As a gay man I find it offensive that these terms are off-handedly tossed around classrooms with no regard to those students who struggle with their own sexual identity and teachers do nothing to stop or prevent this behavior. It must end. The use of the word "gay" to describe something unliked, unappealing, or unacceptable is just as destructive as using racial slurs to suppress groups of people: black, Hispanic, Jews, and Muslims.
